New PTS students enjoy orientation program

Preparation for Tertiary Success participants pose for a photo with Batchelor Institute’s Higher Ed lecturers and staff in Darwin.

Batchelor Institute lecturers last week held a successful Preparation for Tertiary Success (PTS) program for eight new students, at CDU’s Casuarina campus.

The students met with Higher Ed lecturers and other staff through the daylong event, with information about First Nations student support, accommodation, tutoring, pastoral care and other initiatives to help prepare them and support them through their studies.

PTS supports students to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to go on and succeed at university.

Recently, former PTS student, Dabia Nona, from Badu Island, contacted staff to express her gratitude for the PTS program

Batchelor Institute’s Joanne Forrest described Dabia as a “bastion of inspiration” who had overcome many challenges to reach her current position in the final year of a nursing degree with Deakin University.

Dabia, who is also a soon-to-be mum, said she believed she had “made it this far because of PTS”, and proudly mentioned that although she used to just aim for passes or credits in her studies, she has most recently been achieving distinctions.

Following students’ positive reception to this year’s PTS, we hope they too feel well-prepared for following pathways like Dabia’s in the future.
