  • Dr David Hardy is a freelance writer and choral singer living in Brisbane. Since 2011, he has devoted his time to writing and to a PhD in creative writing, which was awarded in 2014. Before that time, David was a diplomat for two decades, working in Australian Embassies and Consulates in Poland, Indonesia, The Philippines, Samoa and Kiribati. He was also engaged by the Queensland Government to support the State’s export initiatives.

David’s writing explores the diversity of expressions of Indigenous identity and queer identity. As part of his PhD, he wrote a novel, ‘Australian Family’, a screenplay for feature comedy, ‘The Art of Living with Veggos’ and a series of short stories and poems, some of which have been published in print and on-line form.

He has been a regular contributor on the craft of writing for WQ, the magazine of the Queensland Writers’ Centre and on queer identity for The Lifted Brow. He is currently writing an anthology with the working title, ‘Gay and Grey’ for The Rag and Bone Man Press, a Melbourne-based publisher, which will be released in November 2015.

  • CURRENT RESEARCH

    PhD (Creative Writing)

Title: Coming Out: Wagga to Warsaw to Wiradjuri - Journeys of Indigenous Identity and Queer Identity

Approach: Through a collection of publishable and performable works of fiction, I consider issues and questions around the journeys of people who, as adults, discover their Indigenous heritage. My writing explores questions around shame and silence that, at times, criss-crosses the experience of those taking a journey through Indigenous and gay self.
