Indigenous Health

The health disadvantages experienced by Indigenous people can be considered historical in origin. In today’s society many of the disadvantages that Indigenous people experience owes much to contemporary structural and social factors, embodied in what are termed the ‘social determinants’ of health. What this means is that economic opportunity (jobs), physical infrastructure (services such as health, education, transport) and social conditions (housing) influence the health of individuals, communities, and societies as a whole. In this specialist stream you will learn about the social determinants of health and the impact that they have on Indigenous health.
