Batchelor Institute Council have appointed Ghungalu and Yiman man, and renowned advocate for the rights of First Nations Australians, Mick Gooda, as Chief Executive Officer.
Alyawarre woman and Chair of Council, Patricia Anderson AO, said the Council made the decision at a Council meeting yesterday, that Mr Gooda would commence as CEO today, Friday 10 September, while a recruitment process was underway to find a new First Nations person to fill the CEO role in the longer term.
Ms Anderson said, “Mr Gooda’s extensive experience, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Co-Commissioner on the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the NT, CEO of the CRC for Aboriginal Health, CEO of ATSIC, Co-Chair of the Queensland First Children and Families Board, and as First Nations Advisor to the Queensland Minister for Housing and Public Works, make him an ideal person to lead Australia’s oldest and only First Nations tertiary education provider of training and research for First Nations students who mostly live in rural and remote communities.”
“Mr Gooda has spent over 35 years advocating for better outcomes for First Nations peoples, he understands the needs of our students, and how we can best support them in their life-long learning journey by providing a culturally safe space, education and training of the highest quality, and an environment where our students learn alongside their own people.”
Mr Gooda said he was grateful for the opportunity to lead Batchelor Institute to fulfill its important role to graduate First Nations students.
Mr Gooda said, “Since its inception in the late 1960s, generations of First Nations professionals, leaders and change-makers have chosen to come to Batchelor Institute to undertake their studies to further their education and gain new skills to advance their careers.”
“Batchelor Institute alumni have made and continue to make great contributions to their families and communities and foster positive change to support First Nations’ self-determination,” said Mr Gooda.
