Batchelor Institute would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereign people of the lands on which our campuses are located. As we share our knowledge, teaching and learning and engage in research practices within this Institution and/or conduct business with a variety of external agencies and organisations, we must always pay respect to the sovereign status of our hosts. Apply your theory-driven research to the real world

Applications from Indigenous Australians for admission to Batchelor Institute’s Research Training Programs can be submitted at any time of year.

How to apply

Application for admission by Indigenous Australians to the higher degree by research program is a two step process. 
 

Step 1

Email graduateschool@batchelor.edu.au with your CV/resume, academic transcripts and a one-page outline of your research proposal. 

Our Graduate School team will arrange a time to meet with you (online or face to face) to discuss your research proposal, consider potential supervisors and clarify whether you meet entry requirements.   

After meeting with our team, you may wish to proceed to full application at Step 2.

 

Step 2

Apply online

The application will take approximately 40 minutes. You will need to create an account, complete relevant sections of the application form and upload required documentation. 

Supporting documentation to upload:

  • Certified copies of academic transcripts of your highest and/or relevant qualifications. 
  • HDR outline of research activity form describing the focus and purpose of your research proposal in 2000 words.
  • A letter of support from a supervisor who has reviewed the proposal and agrees to play a primary supervisory role.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) outlining your relevant work and life experience if using practice-based or practice-led approach to your research.
  • 2 referee reports, one from a community or organisation who may be impacted by the work; and another from an individual who is familiar with your academic skills.

You will need a Unique Student identifier.  If you do not have a USI, please visit www.usi.gov.au to create one before you start the application form. 
 

The assessment process

Applications will be assessed by the Institute’s Research Committee on the following criteria:

  1. The applicant meets the eligibility criteria and has demonstrated capacity and capability to undertake the research award.
  2. The focus of inquiry has academic merit. 
  3. The focus of inquiry aligns with the Institute’s Research or Strategic Plan.
  4. The Institute has the resources (including supervision capacity) to support the applicant effectively throughout their candidature

If your Application for Admission is successful, you will be sent an offer by email. On acceptance of the offer, you will have one (1) year to enrol in a relevant forthcoming Semester. If you do not enrol, your offer will become void and you will need to reapply. 

If your Application for Admission is unsuccessful, you will be sent an outcome by email. The Graduate School will contact you to arrange a discussion with the Head of Graduate School or delegate, regarding the reason(s) for this decision.

What kind of fees do I need to pay?

Higher Degree by Research Program (PhD or Masters) tuition fees for Batchelor Institute students are covered by the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarships.  Maximum periods apply. 

Do I have to be an Indigenous Australian to be eligible to apply?

Yes

Are there scholarships available to support me while I study?

Yes. Information for these can be found on the Scholarships and Support page.

Do I need to study on campus?

No. the program is by research and you are able to study form wherever you live in Australia.
