At Batchelor Institute, we believe in the power of education to transform lives, particularly in First Nations communities. Our commitment to Both-Ways Learning combines traditional knowledge with Western education, creating pathways that honour cultural heritage while equipping students with the skills needed for today’s job market. Recently, our business and digital literacy courses in Tennant Creek have been making a significant impact, opening doors to new opportunities and building confidence among participants.
Empowering Through Learning: A Personal Journey
Jodie, one of our dedicated students, shares her experience: "The course is really doing good for me. It's opening my feelings, and I’m truly learning. I really wanted to get this job, and going through this course is helping me achieve that." Jodie's story is just one of many, demonstrating how our programs are not only educational but also deeply personal, offering a sense of purpose and direction.
A Comprehensive Approach to Business Education
Pal, a business lecturer at Batchelor Institute, explains the extent of our offerings: "In our business courses, we cover everything from digital literacy to business management, leadership, and administrative skills. In this course, we cater to students new to the workforce, equipping them with job-ready skills, as well as those already in admin roles who wish to advance their capabilities and manage their own affairs in their communities."
Currently, Pal is delivering the Certificate I in Workplace Skills in Tennant Creek as part of a broader six-month course run by the Literacy for Life Foundation. This program is designed to improve literacy and numeracy skills within the community. Batchelor Institute supports this initiative by providing the Certificate I as a key segment of the overall program, enhancing students’ job readiness alongside foundational literacy skills. The Literacy for Life Foundation plays a crucial role by coordinating the program logistics, including organising student transportation and providing essential resources, ensuring that participants have the support they need to succeed.
Meeting Unique Community Needs
Training delivery in Tennant Creek addresses unique challenges faced by many students, such as limited access to vehicles and other resources. "It's very important to have Batchelor Institute come to community to deliver training," says Pal. "Our students are gaining skills that are applicable across various jobs—whether it's working with a clinic, Rangers, or managing a store in a community. We’ve seen students like Keith, who started from level one and is now building confidence to tackle more complex skills."
Bridging the Digital Divide with Radio Skills
Keith Rogers, a well-known local radio man, highlights the value of digital literacy in his work: "I’m learning to get to know the radio and how to use computers. It's about more knowledge of your work—like you want to know more about music, how to search for it, and play it on the radio. It's a very valuable tool to use." Keith’s journey reflects the broader impact of digital literacy, not just in traditional business settings but in creative and community-centred roles as well.
Creating Pathways to Success
At Batchelor Institute, our goal is to provide students with the skills needed to succeed in diverse roles within their communities. Whether it's through business management, digital literacy, or unique applications like radio, we are committed to providing education that honours cultural contexts and meets the needs of today's job market.
