Acknowledgement of country

Batchelor Institute would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereign people of the lands on which our campuses are located. As we share our knowledge, teaching and learning and engage in research practices within this Institution and/or conduct business with a variety of external agencies and organisations, we must always pay respect to the sovereign status of our hosts. May their Ancestors always be remembered and honoured, their Elders listened to and respected, all members treated with dignity and fairness — in the present and well into the future.

We also acknowledge and pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever with our hosts, custodianship of country and the binding relationship they have with the land. Batchelor Institute extends this acknowledgment and expression of respect to all sovereign custodians — past, present and emerging. By expressing Acknowledgement of Country we encourage all to extend and practice respect to all First Nations people wherever their lands are located.

AIATSIS Summit
2 minute read

Batchelor Press recently participated in the 2025 AIATSIS Summit which took the theme Voices of Empowerment: Strengthening our Future and was held at Darwin Convention Centre 2 to 6 June. The Institute was a Youth Delegate Sponsor for the Summit and as part of this sponsorship ran a stall at the event which was managed by Batchelor Press in tandem with Maninder Malhi from the Institute’s marketing team. Visitors to the stall availed themselves of Institute tote bags which included course guides and various Institute merchandise. A range of Batchelor Press products were also available for sale.

The Batchelor Institute stall attracted steady interest and sales throughout the week. The Larrakia-related books Gulumerrdjin Colouring Book and Gulumerrdjin Madawa were popular sellers no doubt because the Summit took place in Larrakia country and possibly as the book’s vibrant illustrations are by Jason Lee whose artwork also featured on the Summit T-shirt. Among the Summit’s keynote speakers was Pat Anderson, former Chair, Batchelor Institute Council, who presented online from Canberra. Other former Institute people such as Penny Watson also attended, now part of the AIATSIS team at their relatively new Alice Springs office. Watson took great interest in the book All my Country, the Batchelor Institute Art Collection (available at the stall) as a former Institute art lecturer working with many of the artists and artist-in-residence programs included in the book.

Many thanks to Maninder (Mani) for coordinating the Institute’s participation, and to Jo Wood (Batchelor Library) and Praveen Sudaraka (Finance) who assisted Maurice O’Riordan (Batchelor Press) on the stall throughout the week.
