Acknowledgement of country

Batchelor Institute would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereign people of the lands on which our campuses are located. As we share our knowledge, teaching and learning and engage in research practices within this Institution and/or conduct business with a variety of external agencies and organisations, we must always pay respect to the sovereign status of our hosts. May their Ancestors always be remembered and honoured, their Elders listened to and respected, all members treated with dignity and fairness — in the present and well into the future.

We also acknowledge and pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever with our hosts, custodianship of country and the binding relationship they have with the land. Batchelor Institute extends this acknowledgment and expression of respect to all sovereign custodians — past, present and emerging. By expressing Acknowledgement of Country we encourage all to extend and practice respect to all First Nations people wherever their lands are located.

ILF Book Supply Program
26 August 2025
2 minute read

Batchelor Press is pleased to announce that three of its titles have been selected by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) for their 2026 Book Supply program. These titles are Galapin Jack’s & other Wardaman Stories (2025), Bornorron Warrag (2023), and Gulumerrdjin Madawa (2019).

Each year ILF invites publishers nationwide to offer publications for national distribution to schools and literacy-based programs. The emphasis is on books for children and young adults which promote the talents of Indigenous Australian authors and artists and which are in English or bilingual (including English). This year’s Book Supply titles (for 2026) were selected from over 1,200 books.

Gulumerrdjin Madawa, an alphabet book with Larrakia language featuring Top End animals illustrated by Larrakia artist Jason Lee, is one of Batchelor Press’s steady sellers. This is the second time the book has been selected for ILF’s Book Supply program.

Bornorron Warrag and Galapin Jack’s are both selected for the first time. Both books are based on Wardaman stories as told by Sally Wiynmarr, Bill Harney Senior and Elsie Raymond in Wardaman language and translated into English by linguist Francesca Merlan. Both books are illustrated by Bill Harney Junior. Bornorron Warrag is built around a single story by Sally Wiynmarr and a single illustration by Bill Junior. Galapin Jack’s comprises six stories, each featuring key illustrations by Bill Junior. His original drawings for the book were acquired for the Batchelor Institute Art Collection.

Burramatta: Eel Place (Batchelor Press, 2025) by Darug author and illustrator Ceane Towers was shortlisted but not part of the final selection for the 2026 Book Supply program.

Batchelor Press congratulates all those involved in these publications for catching the eyes of ILF's selection panel and for significantly expanding audiences for their work.
