Local Indigenous artists have embedded culture into the learning environment at the Lajamanu Learning Centre with a new mural that shares important Jukurrpa (Dreaming) stories. The project was coordinated by Batchelor Institute in December 2025 and provided students with a shared learning experience that strengthened and celebrated local identity, culture and storytelling.
The mural features works by respected Warlpiri artists Myra Patrick Herbert, Agnes Napanangka Donnelly, Ursula Napangardi Marks and Judy Nambia Martin, and was delivered alongside learning activities at the centre.
Beyond brightening the Learning Centre, the mural helps to support Batchelor Institute’s Both Ways philosophy, bringing Western educational practices together with Indigenous knowledge systems.
The mural supports discussion and storytelling by integrating, art, culture and learning, while reinforcing partnerships between Batchelor Institute, Warnayaka Art and Cultural Aboriginal Corporation and local artists. The project has created a lasting space where culture, learning and community connection can continue to grow.
Discussions are already underway to deliver additional murals at the Lajamanu Learning Centre and to extend the initiative to other learning centres across the Northern Territory.
