Acknowledgement of country

Batchelor Institute would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereign people of the lands on which our campuses are located. As we share our knowledge, teaching and learning and engage in research practices within this Institution and/or conduct business with a variety of external agencies and organisations, we must always pay respect to the sovereign status of our hosts. May their Ancestors always be remembered and honoured, their Elders listened to and respected, all members treated with dignity and fairness — in the present and well into the future.

We also acknowledge and pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever with our hosts, custodianship of country and the binding relationship they have with the land. Batchelor Institute extends this acknowledgment and expression of respect to all sovereign custodians — past, present and emerging. By expressing Acknowledgement of Country we encourage all to extend and practice respect to all First Nations people wherever their lands are located.

SEE Team Boosts Skills Training Across NT Communities
4 minute read

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) team at Batchelor Institute has been actively engaging with Indigenous Australian communities across the Northern Territory over the past two months, promoting Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) training while fostering partnerships to deliver diverse skills development programs. Aligned with our “Both Ways” learning philosophy, the team is empowering local communities through education tailored to their needs and aspirations.

Building Partnerships in Maningrida

In Maningrida, the SEE team has collaborated with the Bawinanga Homelands Aboriginal Corporation and the NJA-MARLEYA Cultural Leaders and Justice Group at the Youth Centre. Beyond LLND training, these organisations have requested support for programs in Civil Operations, Business, Automotive, and Conservation and Ecosystem Management (CEM). This holistic approach ensures training aligns with community priorities, equipping individuals with skills for sustainable employment and cultural preservation.

Supporting Industry Pathways

Working closely with the Department of Mining and Energy and Batchelor Institute’s Civil Construction team, the SEE team is delivering Foundation Skills (FSK) training to local Aboriginal people. This foundational training serves as a stepping stone for further development in industries such as Engineering, Resources and Infrastructure, and Civil Operations, with programs set to commence in June 2025. By building core skills, the SEE team is helping individuals prepare for diverse career opportunities.

Ongoing Training at Kybrook Farm

At Kybrook Farm Community in Pine Creek, FSK trainer Karen Kahn is making significant strides in supporting students to enhance their job readiness. Through targeted training, students are gaining the skills needed to pursue careers in industries of their choice, reflecting Batchelor Institute’s commitment to flexible, student-centred education.

Promoting Opportunities Across the NT

The SEE team has been actively promoting training opportunities at community events, including:

  • Maningrida Job Fair, hosted by Bawinanga Community Projects and Employment Services and the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), where the team showcased Batchelor Institute’s training programs.
  • Tiwi Futures Expo on the Bathurst Islands, sparking interest among attendees to study at Batchelor Institute and explore career pathways.

These promotional efforts have generated significant interest in the SEE program and Batchelor Institute’s broader training scope, which includes fields like business, automotive, and ecosystem management.

Looking Ahead

The SEE team has planned further promotional activities throughout 2025 to continue engaging communities and stakeholders across the NT.
