A number of works from the BIITE Art Collection are on show in an exhibition in Sydney. The exhibition, Taripang/Dharripa/Trepang Remix, is adapted from the Taripang/ Dharripa/Trepang exhibition which showed at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art (NCCA), Darwin in 2024 and focused on Aboriginal and Macassan contact histories originating with the demand for trepang (sea cucumber) from Top End waters.

Remix is a scaled-down adaptation which retains, however, most of the BIITE Art Collection works loaned for the original exhibition given that these include the oldest work in the exhibition, the bark painting Macassan Trepang Fishermen in Prau (c. 1970) attributed to the late Groote Eylandt artist Thomas Nandjiwarra Amagula. The other loaned works include an Untitled bark painting (2006) by Maningrida artist George Pascoe which depicts a number of legacies relating to the Top End’s Macassan history such as clay pots and rice. Pascoe’s painting also relays the story of one Yolngu man who travelled back with the Macassans but who tragically died mid-voyage. Many of these details about the painting were only uncovered in the course of preparing the work for loan, with particular thanks to Be Keillor (Culture Office, Maningrida Arts and Culture) and George Pascoe.

Remix is showing at The Cross Art Projects, Sydney, 7 June to 12 July 2025. The Taripang/ Dharripa/Trepang exhibition catalogue will be launched by NCCA at the exhibition’s closing 12 July.
