Acknowledgement of country

Batchelor Institute would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereign people of the lands on which our campuses are located. As we share our knowledge, teaching and learning and engage in research practices within this Institution and/or conduct business with a variety of external agencies and organisations, we must always pay respect to the sovereign status of our hosts. May their Ancestors always be remembered and honoured, their Elders listened to and respected, all members treated with dignity and fairness — in the present and well into the future.

We also acknowledge and pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever with our hosts, custodianship of country and the binding relationship they have with the land. Batchelor Institute extends this acknowledgment and expression of respect to all sovereign custodians — past, present and emerging. By expressing Acknowledgement of Country we encourage all to extend and practice respect to all First Nations people wherever their lands are located.

Batchelor Institute is pleased to announce the 3-year appointment of Ms Bess Nungarrayi Price AM as Chair of the Institute Council, and Mrs Valmai Dyer as a Council member. Both Ms Price and Mrs Dyer were previously appointed as interim members for 12 months.

Ms Aderyn Chatterton, Acting Chief Executive of the Northern Territory Department of Education and Training (DET), also joined the Council as replacement for Ms Susan Bowden on Council as the NTG representative.

Ms Price is a Warlpiri woman who brings extensive leadership experience, a lifelong commitment to Indigenous Affairs, Aboriginal communities, and a deep understanding of education, culture, and public service in the Northern Territory. Her appointment marks an important step in the continued governance and strategic direction of the Institute.

Valmai Dyer originally a teacher and one-time Acting Deputy Principal of the Katherine Area School, is now a director and shareholder of family company APN Pty Ltd, she has a strong commitment to remote education and governance.

Ms Chatterton joins Council as the NTG representative, bringing valuable expertise and connections across the education sector that will support the Institute's mission of delivering quality Indigenous tertiary education and training.

Batchelor Institute Chief Executive Officer Renee Long said the appointments strengthen the Council's ability to guide the Institute in delivering positive educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

"We are delighted to welcome Bess Price as Council Chair and Valmai Dyer as a Council member. Their skills, knowledge and commitment to education and community outcomes will be invaluable as we continue to advance the Institute's vision and strategic goals."

The Institute also extends its sincere gratitude to outgoing Council members Susan Bowden and Peter Renehan for their dedicated service and significant contributions to the governance of Batchelor Institute.

"On behalf of the Institute, I thank Susan and Peter for their leadership, commitment and support during their time on Council. Their contributions have helped strengthen the Institute and position it for the future," said Ms Long.

Established under the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education Act 1999, the Council is the governing authority of the Institute, with responsibility for the control and management of the organisation. The Council provides strategic oversight and governance, while the day-to-day management of the Institute is delegated to the Chief Executive Officer.

The Institute's Council members participate in comprehensive induction and ongoing governance education programs and operate in accordance with contemporary best-practice governance principles.

Batchelor Institute looks forward to working with the new Council members as it continues its commitment to empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through education, training and pathways to employment.
